Greetings

It is with great pleasure

your feedback in addition to your sharing this "news" with others

Broccoli and tomato, 2 superstar
cancer-fighting veggies, appear to be the most effective when they are
eaten together vs. on their own. Researchers from the University of Illinois reported in the journal Cancer Research
that these 2 foods work together synergistically and were more
effective in slowing the growth of prostate cancer cells in laboratory
animals when eaten in tandem. So put tomatoes and
broccoli on your salad and add some steamed broccoli florets to your
marinara sauce.
In
other food and cancer news, European researchers reported that olive oil
may have specific anti-cancer effects. Study subjects that consumed a
prescribed amount of olive oil daily for 2 weeks had lower levels of a
substance linked to oxidative damage of a cell's DNA. This is
consistent with the fact that Mediterranean countries who enjoy olive oil
as a dietary staple have lower levels of breast, colon, ovarian and
prostate cancer.

Supplements in the News
In a new report (Archives
of Neurology), scientists note that older adults
with the highest intakes of folate were 50% less likely to develop
Alzheimer's disease than those with the lowest intakes. Foods that
provide the most folate include beans, citrus fruits, dark leafy greens,
wheat germ, avocados, asparagus and turkey.
In
related news, Dutch researchers reported that older adult study subjects
that received a daily supplement of 800mcg of folic acid for 3 years had improved cognitive function, especially with memory and
speed of information processing, compared to study subjects that received a
placebo.

On the Nutrition Watch
Beware of the "new" trans fat!
Many
companies are removing trans fats from their foods and replacing them
with "interesterified fats." Emerging new reports
including one in the January issue of Nutrition and Metabolism Journal
found these fats may be even worse for
us than trans fats. To identify foods that contain interesterified
fats, look for "fully hydrogenated oil" in the ingredients list.
Hold the Milk! (in your tea, that is)
Freshly
brewed tea has been shown in numerous studies to boost cardiovascular
health, but new research found that adding milk cancels these
benefits. The heart-healthy active ingredients in tea are
antioxidants called flavonoids. Apparently, the proteins in milk bind
to them, rendering them useless. This may explain the "British
paradox" -- meaning, we observe lower rates of cardiovascular disease
in countries where drinking lots of tea is commonplace -- except for Britain.
It's typical in Britain
to add milk to tea. For best results -- drink lots of freshly brewed
tea -- and hold the milk!

Dump the Liquid Calories!
My
unyeilding advice to get people to dump their liquid calories just got yet
another scientific boost when researchers at Penn State found that people consumed
just as much food when given a caloric drink like soda as they did when
they drank a non-caloric beverage like water -- to the tune of consuming
128-151 more calories per meal when they drank soda vs. water.
This and other studies confirm that liquid calories do not suppress
appetite in the same manner as their solid food counterparts.
This
new science is especially provocative given that Americans are in the midst
of an uprecedented obesity epidemic and that liquid calories currently make
up 22% of the American diet. If we could get Americans to stop
drinking their calories, we could halt the obesity epidemic dead in its
tracks. I love water!
